Growing up in the 70's the only clue how would have that is was St.George's day would be the flag flying from a church.

No ridiculous OTT bollocks, just a tip of the cap really to acknowledge the day. That's properly English. No need to ape other countries national day wild celebrations, they only do it as they are not as happy with their lot as we are.

Doesn't Eddie B usually post this thread? Or has done in the past.

When I was growing up it was always a day that was quietly acknowledged with a nod and a quiet drink (by the adults anyway)

St.Patricks was always celebrated as more of a day for everybody to enjoy. Maybe it was because a lot of pub landlords were Irish or as I suspect the history of these islands is more Celt despite all the water which has since passed under the bridge.

Init?

Happy George Day

Celebrating Saints' days is for insignificant countries with an inferiority complex.

I just wonder how an Anatolian born Roman soldier who never set foot in the country ended up as our patron saint.
At least St Patrick was English.

As lowermarsh says it was always a day that most were barely aware of.
Not sure I see a country ‘happy with their lot’ at the moment though.

National days are all a bit shit anyway
Especially if the government doesn’t even see them as worthy of a holiday

They are mostly celebrating their independence usually from an oppressor - often GB.

Nationalism is divisive. Better off without it? Stanhope has a quite an entertaining take on it.

Queen's Fish Bar

If a country was oppressed by the British at least they probably got a useful official language, possibly a half decent railway and some kind of organised government infrastructure out of it.

Imagine being colonised by the French, Belgians, ze Germans, Japanese etc. Bet those countries who were under their rule are a bit jealous.

Not defending the oppression of other countries and empires etc, fact is the world was a far different place back then and if we hadn't turned a third of the world map red some other fucker would have.
